A Family Tradition

Culture In A Bowl is rooted in family, tradition, and the the love of West African food. We were officially founded in 2018, but our story dates back much further. In the 1980s and early 1990s, “Chic Afrique” was Detroit's hottest West African restaurant, and a favorite with locals and international travelers. The restaurant was founded by Phyllis Sancho, a proud Liberian immigrant.

Phyllis Sancho was a devoted mother, wife, sister and teacher who was beloved in her Detroit community. When she passed on in 2006, the community lost and Angel and the “Chic Afrique” restaurant.

Fast-forward to 2014. Phyllis Sancho’s grand-niece, Tracy Garley (pictured to the right), began catering events in Detroit, using authentic Liberian cuisine and recipes passed down from her great-aunt, Phylis. In the spring of 2018, the Culture in a Bowl Catering Company was born, bringing Phyllis Sancho’s flavors and food to a new generation.
